Heal Your Body with Therapeutic Ultrasound

Therapeutic ultrasound (different from diagnostic ultrasound) can help your tendons, muscles, and ligaments heal more effectively. Our compassionate chiropractors invite you to try this relaxing therapy to expedite your healing and support your wellness.

What Does Therapeutic Ultrasound Treat?

We use this treatment modality to heal damaged muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Therapeutic ultrasound commonly treats orthopedic injuries, but this technology can also help with:

  • Tendonitis
  • Muscle strains and tears
  • Sprains and ligament injuries
  • Joint contracture or tightness
  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain

While therapeutic ultrasound can be beneficial, it may not be for everyone. Avoid therapeutic ultrasound if you have a pacemaker, a metal implant in the target area, or are pregnant.

How Does Therapeutic Ultrasound Work?

If you look inside the ultrasound unit, you’ll see a small crystal that vibrates rapidly when electrically charged. These rapid vibrations create piezoelectric waves, entering the affected tissue to increase blood flow. There are 2 effects of therapeutic ultrasound: deep heating and non-thermal.

Deep Heating Effects

Therapeutic ultrasound can provide deep heating effects to your body’s soft tissue. By heating tendons, muscles, and ligaments, blood circulation increases in these areas. It’s theorized this supports the natural healing process and helps decrease pain.

Using therapeutic ultrasound in a non-thermal way (cavitation) elicits rapid contraction in your tissue—because energy enters the body through ultrasound, causing microscopic gas bubbles around your tissue to expand and contract. The theory is that rapid expansion and contraction can help speed cellular processes and improve healing.
