Did you know your spine is one of the most incredible structures in your body? Today, I’m sharing five fascinating facts about your spine that most people don’t know – and how understanding them can help you take better care of your health.
Hi, I’m Dr. Stacey Rodgers from Rodgers Stein Chiropractic Center, and I love helping people discover just how amazing their bodies truly are.
Fact number one: Your spine is made up of 33 bones at birth, but as you grow, some fuse together, leaving you with 24 movable vertebrae as an adult, along with the sacrum and coccyx. This design allows you flexibility while also protecting your spinal cord, which is like the body’s electrical highway.
Fact number two: The spine has over 100 joints, allowing for a wide range of movement. It’s easy to take that for granted until stiffness or pain limits your motion, which is why keeping your spine mobile is so important.
Fact number three: Your spine naturally has three curves – in your neck, mid-back, and lower back. These curves are essential for absorbing shock and maintaining balance when you walk, run, or even sit. Poor posture or spinal misalignments can flatten or exaggerate these curves, leading to discomfort and other health issues over time.
Fact number four: The discs between your vertebrae are mostly made of water, and they act like little shock absorbers for your spine. Throughout the day, these discs lose water, which is why you’re actually a bit shorter in the evening than you are in the morning. Staying hydrated and moving throughout the day helps keep your discs healthier.
And fact number five: Your spine and nervous system are closely linked, with nerves branching off from your spinal cord and traveling to every part of your body. This is why spinal health is essential for overall wellness, not just for back pain. Misalignments can interfere with how your nerves function, impacting energy levels, digestion, sleep, and more.
Pretty amazing, isn’t it?
